Steven Salaita is speaking at local universities this week about what he says was a violation of academic freedom. The University of Illinois Board of Trustees voted last month to rescind the school’s offer to Salaita as a tenured professor in the American-Indian studies department. This came on the heels of him making controversial remarks on Twitter about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. University President Robert Easter said Salaita’s remarks would hinder an open learning environment, while supporters of the professor think the decision is an affront to academic freedom.
