Ousted professor launches tour to talk on academic freedom
Steven Salaita is speaking at local universities this week about what he says was a violation of academic freedom. The University of Illinois Board of Trustees voted last month to rescind the school’s offer to Salaita as a tenured professor in the American-Indian studies department. This came on the heels of him making controversial remarks on Twitter about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. University President Robert Easter said Salaita’s remarks would hinder an open learning environment, while supporters of the professor think the decision is an affront to academic freedom. Steven Salaita joins us to explain why he thinks the University’s decision stifles the discourse.
