In May for the first time, participatory budgeting comes to Chicago’s 5th ward. Residents there will be voting on how to spend some $1 million in funds typically allocated to each alderman for improvements in their ward. Residents of Chicago’s 49th ward have been voting on this segment of their ward’s budget for several years now, and this year three other wards are trying it out. Proponents say participatory budgeting is the start of rekindling democracy in Chicago. AP: Flikr- 401 (K)
