WBEZ Reporter Tells The Story Of Deported U.S. Veterans
You can serve in the United States military, be honorably discharged, but still be deported.
Between 2013 and 2018 an estimated 92 non-citizen veterans of the armed forces were deported.
That’s according to a report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Deported veterans’ groups say that number is much higher.
Morning Shift digs into the stories of some of those veterans with WBEZ Race, Class, and Communities reporter Maria Ines Zamudio.
She traveled to Tijuana, Mexico where dozens of those deported veterans now reside. She learned more about their stories, the events that led up to their deportations, and what life is like for them outside of the U.S.
