In our new Morning Shift series, we ask Dennis Rodkin of Crain’s Chicago Business: “What’s that building?” 

For this first installment, Dennis digs deep into the history of the I AM Temple at 176 W. Washington Street in Chicago’s Loop. The 15-story building started its life as an Elks Lodge in 1916 and was later converted into a temple for a spiritual-awakening organization founded in the early 1930s by Chicagoans Ray and Edna Ballard.
