Last September, Mayor Rahm Emanuel pledged $36 million to citywide mentorship programs in an effort to curb violence in Chicago through one-on-one mentoring. One year later, however, the goal has hit a snag: there just aren’t enough mentors. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago says they’re turning away boys due to lack of volunteer mentors, particularly male mentors of color. Morning Shift talks to Brad Whitlock, manager at BBBS about recruitment efforts and what it takes to be a mentor.
