Nerdette Newsletter: My Favorite Book Of 2019 (So Far!)

Heya! It’s Friday, and now that I don’t work weekends, that actually means something to me! Hope your week went well and that you’re looking forward to some good stuff this weekend.

If you, like WBEZ’s new weekend anchor Annie Russell, want to just stay in and bake something delicious, I can’t tell you how great this pumpkin bread is. It has fresh ginger, an entire actual cup of olive oil and it’s topped with pepitas and sugar. I didn’t even make the salted maple butter, because is was plenty moist and sweet enough without. But live your life! If you want the butter, make the g****** butter!

I recently finished my favorite book of 2019 so far. It’s called Nothing to See Here, and it’s about an aimless woman who finds her life’s purpose when she’s asked to take care of 10 year-old twins who spontaneously combust when they get upset. It’s not magical realism as much as it is a very strange situation in very real life, and it’s such a refreshing, delightful, strange novel. I raved about it on Nerdette’s instagram, where I love to rave about books I love!

Lots of you have been asking if you should read The Golden Compass before watching His Dark Materials, the HBO show based on the YA series by Philip Pullman. My answer is yes, DUH! The audiobook is extra fun because it’s narrated by Pullman along with a full cast. And it’s a great time to dive into the series because Pullman’s started writing a NEW series in the same world called Book of Dust, and the first two books are out, and they are fabulous.

And oh yeah, there's a new episode of Nerdette Recaps right here(We break down the TV series premiere of His Dark Materials.)

Speaking of TV adaptations of my favorite books, Dublin Murders on STARZ premieres this weekend. (STARZ figured out how to get me to pay for STARZ!) The show is based on Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad series, and I am SO EXCITED to check out the show. These are also books that are worth reading! Vulture even recently called Tana French the best living mystery writer! We are not f****** around about this, y’all!

Enjoy the delicious carbs, great books, and hopefully-great TV! See you next week.
