Fall TV With Linda Holmes And Jim DeRogatis

Two of our favorite podcast hosts and pop culture opinion-havers stop by to nerd out about their television favorites. NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour host, Linda Holmes and Jim DeRogatis of Sound Opinions join us to talk about the most under appreciated and most anticipated shows in their queues.

Linda Holmes: Insecure

This is the long-awaited series by Issa Rae, creator of the web show Awkward Black Girl. It’s about a thirtysomething woman who decides she’s done with trying to please everyone in her life other than herself. (Premieres October 9 on HBO.)

Tricia Bobeda: Better Things

A show about a single mom of three daughters trying to make it in Hollywood as an aging actress. It’s created by Pamela Adlon, who also stars in the series, along with Louis CK. It’s already been renewed for a second season. (Thursdays at 10 on FX.)

Jim DeRogatis: Longmire

It originally aired on A&E and was cancelled-- but an avid fanbase protested, and now Longmire is on Netflix. It’s about a Sheriff in a fictional, crime-ridden Wyoming county. Bonus: It co-stars Katee Sackhoff, also known as Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica. (Season 5 is out now on Netflix.)

Greta Johnsen: Jane the Virgin

This is one of Greta’s favorite shows for many reasons. It’s based on spanish-speaking telenovelas, but it’s self-aware in its excessive drama. It’s funny, it’s heartfelt, and Jane, played by Gina Rodriguez, is one of the most likable characters on TV. (Premieres Oct 17 on the CW.)
