Daily Rehearsal: First Floor Theater leaves University of Chicago behind...sort-of
- For every theater company that says, "You know what? I'm too old for this," another says, "Oh wow this'll be fun!" The latest is First Floor Theater, started by a group of University of Chicago grads that they're describing as an "ensemble-based non-profit theatre initiative." It's named after the First Floor Theater in the University student center, where many numerous theater endeavors took place until the recently opened Logan Center was built. If it sounds like they haven't quite left college, well, that's the point: They say they're looking "to create an artistic home for University of Chicago alumni artists in the greater Chicago community and contextualize theatre for the current moment within the ‘life of the mind.’" First Floor just finished up a show at Abbey Fest and you can join them for their opening party at the Den Theater in October.
- Haven't gotten enough from our former Governor? Blagojevich, Blagojevich! seeks to rectify that. The "satrical romp" puts Blago with historical figures like Elvis and Nixon and the story behind it is funny: "Since receiving an autographed copy of Governor Blagojevich’s autobiography, Playwright Michael K. Feinstein has been hooked on the larger than life story of Rod...." At the Atheneum in September.
- Chicago Teases for The Strip: A Benefit for The Burlesque Hall of Fame sounds like a good sexy cause for your Friday. Proceeds from the benefit go to a Las Vegas-located museum. "In addition to their well known burlesque festival, the "Miss Exotic World Competition", the BHoF currently houses a unique collection of burlesque costumes, posters, playbills, and other memorabilia from the legendary greats like Gypsy Rose Lee, Tempest Storm, Blaze Starr and more. Due to a local freeway expansion project, the BHoF has until Aug. 31st to raise the funds needed to move all of their memorabilia out of storage to a new location before the building is lost." A ticket is $25.
- The Equity Jeff nominations are many so peruse at your leisure. But at least two nominees can get excited; Mike Tutaj received three nominations in the category of Projections/Media Design and Todd Rosenthal matched him in Scenic Design - Large.
Correction: A previous version of this story misstated the date of the First Floor Theater's opening party.
