38 years ago today, the modern environmental movement was born. Once considered a fringe observance, now Earth Day is honored by governments and institutions around the globe — along with millions of people. The event will be celebrated by a billion people in 174 countries.

Also, the United Nations celebrates World Environment Day, each year, on June 5th. It’s one of the principal vehicles through which the U.N. stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
