According to city officials, 50 new full-time police officers will be hired to secure the bus and rail stations of the Chicago Transit Authority. Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says the plan for 50 new police officers came in the wake of the recent rash of crimes on the CTA.

“The same cop on the same beat, every single day. In this case, the same officers on the same transit lines, knowing the rail systems intimately and responding to crime issues,” he said.

McCarthy says officials are still planning out whether the CTA beat cops will be a mix of veteran and rookie officers. The new recruits are scheduled to begin training in Chicago’s Police Academy this fall. Officers are expected to be added to the CTA by spring 2012.

Previously, the CTA hired part-time security. Now, the agency plans to invest $10 million to hire these full time officers.

A spokesman for the Chicago Federation of Police welcomes the news, but he thinks new officers should be hired more often.
