A Memorial Rises At Burr Oak Cemetery

ALSIP, Ill. (AP) — Human remains and grave items recovered when a grave desecration was found in 2009 at a suburban Chicago cemetery have been re-interned.

About 2,000 human remains and grave items received a burial ceremony at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip on Tuesday.

The desecration took place between 2003 and 2009 at the historic cemetery. Several former cemetery workers were convicted of desecrating bodies and removing skeletal remains to sell graves to customers unaware they were buying previously sold plots.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, who organized the ceremony, says the burial is a symbolic culmination of the scandal.

The sheriff says the cemetery is under new management and improvements have been made.
