The Day Today: Later this week, the Community Media Workshop will honor the 2013 Studs Terkel award winners for excellence in covering and reflecting Chicago’s diverse communities. Two-thirds of this year’s class, Chicago Reporter‘s Megan Cottrell and Fernando Diaz, managing editor of Hoy Chicago, serve as Monday’s panelists. They take on the Cook County Medical Examiner’s online photo project, the Chateau Hotel and the Urban Institute’s dim report on the Chicago Housing Authority’s Plan for Transformation.

Beavers Trial: Jury selection began Monday in the trial of Cook County Commissioner William Beavers, who faces tax evasion charges for allegedly using campaign money for personal use, in part to fund a gambling habit, and for failing to pay taxes on said moneys. Beavers is just one of several local black politicians, including Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, former Ald. Sandi Jackson, racked with legal troubles. Chicago Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th), whose father, the Honorable Eugene Sawyer, was elected mayor by the city council after the sudden death of Harold Washington, joins Afternoon Shift to ruminate on the state of Chicago’s African-American politicians.

Fight Night: Former boxer Bill Hillman, who founded and runs the Windy City Story Slam, visits with protégé Adrian Granados, a former victim of gang violence in Cicero who has managed to stay on the straight and narrow through boxing. In fact, Granados is scheduled to fight a former world champion for ESPN’s Friday Night Fights at the UIC Pavilion on March 22.
