Springfield Gun Panel: The first of two Illinois House judiciary committee public hearings on gun safety began Tuesday in Springfield. House Speaker Michael Madigan said the hearings would allow gun-rights supporters, gun-control advocates and police to offer their views and argue their cases—but as our statehouse reporter Tony Arnold explains, it appears to be another gathering of the usual suspects.

Sinkane: Sudanese-born rocker Ahmed Gallab and his family came to the United States as political exiles back in the late 1980s. Gallab, who performs as Sinkane with his band, was only six when they arrived. Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, the Gallab family surrounded itself with music. He eventually gravitated toward punk rock, and set up in Ohio. He’s toured with some big names in indie rock, including Caribou, Of Montreal and Yeasayer. You can hear threads of indie rock, punk, jazz and Sudanese music in that of his band Sinkane. Their complex blend of styles fits perfectly with the ever-burgeoning Brooklyn scene, where Ahmed currently lives. He’ll chat and perform with Sinkane on The Afternoon Shift.
