Cook County Commissioner and former Chicago Alderman Bill Beavers is scheduled to have his first court appearance Friday since being indicted on federal tax charges last week.
Prosecutors say Beavers used campaign funds for personal expenses and failed to report the money as income. They say he also caused employees to file false information about how the campaign funds were spent.
Attorney Sam Adam Jr. represents Beavers and said he will plead not guilty. Adam said prosecutors are bringing this case to be vindictive.
He said in a regular tax case the government would make you pay the back taxes and some penalties, they wouldn’t indict you.
Adam said Beavers will hold a press conference after the court hearing Friday afternoon.
