“A new U.S. Census study shows the Chicago region lost the third most residents to domestic migration.

On net more than 63,000 people a year moved somewhere else.

Los Angeles and New York City are the only metropolitan areas that have had more people move away than Chicago since 2000.

Ken Johnson is a demographer at Loyola University Chicago.

He says ""We’ve known for some time that cook county was losing fairly large numbers of people through outmigration, but to see the whole chicago metropolitan area is losing domestic migrants, and a rate that’s faster since the 2000 census than it was in the 1990s, is somewhat surprising.""

Meanwhile, some outlying suburbs are undergoing rapid growth.
