Chicago election officials say an aldermanic candidate for the 16th Ward has been arrested.

Election board spokesman Jim Allen said candidate Hal Baskin was briefly arrested at a polling place on the city’s South Side.

“It was some kind of verbal assault of some sort, a feeling of being threatened. And they contacted law enforcement. They contacted 911 which is the right thing to do if there’s some kind of situation involving intimidation,” Allen said.

A spokesman at Baskin’s campaign headquarters said the candidate did nothing wrong. He said Baskin was trying to report unlawful electioneering when an election judge became belligerent with him.

The Chicago Police would not immediately confirm the incident.

Baskin is running against incumbent JoAnn Thompson.
