The president of the Chicago Board of Education has resigned.

There’s been speculation for weeks that Mayor Richard Daley would replace Board President Rufus Williams.

Today, Williams offered his resignation to the mayor.

Williams was named as board president in 2006. His term was not up until 2011, but he has stepped on toes at City Hall.

Williams had publicly lobbied for Daley to choose the district’s number two in command as new schools CEO. Instead, the mayor picked CTA head Ron Huberman.

Under state law, Chicago‘s mayor names both school board members and the CEO of the public schools.

There’s speculation that Michael Scott will return as board president. Scott made few waves in the system when he served for five years prior to Williams.
