A Chicago developer has been convicted on federal charges of bribing an alderman.

After a weeklong trial, millionaire Calvin Boender was convicted Thursday on five counts of bribery and obstruction of justice.

In exchange for a zoning change, Boender gave former alderman Isaac Carothers nearly $40,000 in home improvements and gifts, such as central air conditioning and tickets to a Chicago White Sox playoff game.

Carothers was also charged, and he resigned his post last month after pleading guilty.

But Boender decided to fight. His lawyers insisted he was only trying to turn around a blighted neighborhood.

The scandal has touched a number of high-profile politicians. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley was subpoenaed to testify at Boender’s trial, but he never took the stand.
