There were no surprises at the White House press conference this morning announcing Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s chief of staff, would be stepping down. Emanuel gave an emotional speech, saying he would be returning to Chicago, “the greatest city in the greatest country in the world,” where it is expected he will enter the race for mayor. While he has not made a formal announcement yet, that hasn’t stopped the media from speculating as to how things will go down. The New York Times breaks down his strengths (money and connections) and weaknesses (weak Chicago ties and that tricky residency issue). USA Today echoes this, adding that despite his political success, Emanuel has made some enemies along the way. If he does in fact run, Bloomberg thinks Emanuel might have to do some explaining when it comes to his income. They report that he’s worth between $6.7 million to $15.2 million, not a great asset coming during a time when the city’s unemployment rate is close to 10%. The Washington Post’s political blog, The Fix, is polling readers on whether they think Emanuel can win the mayoral race.
