Some Chicago non-profits are gearing up to bring aid to Haiti after the country was devastated by a powerful earthquake earlier this week.The Children’s Place Association provides support to families effected by HIV and AIDS. Its headquarters is in Chicago but two years ago it branched out to communities in Haiti. Seven employees were in Haiti at the time of the earthquake. But the Chicago office still has not heard from them.
John Sweeney is the Director of International Programs.
SWEENEY: While hoping for the best, we are planning for the worst. We are mobilizing support here in the Chicago community. We have done a widespread communications effort.
Sweeney says the Children’s Place is working to raise funds for aid. He says members of the Chicago staff are planning to travel to the country as soon as possible to help the 500 Haitians the agency supports.
