Chicago Police shot and killed more people in the first six months of this year than they did in all of 2010.  According to the latest quarterly report from the Independent Police Review Authority, Chicago officers shot and killed 14 people in the first six months of this year.  That’s one more person than they killed in the entire year last year.

The quarterly report only goes up to June 30, so it doesn’t include police-involved shootings from this July, of which there were many.  Superintendent Garry McCarthy addressed the high number of recent police shootings at a press conference last week.  “People are willing to point and fire guns at police officers on a regular basis here in this city.  So there’s something going on, there’s a wanton disregard for law, and you know, the fact is our officers are in these confrontations every single day and doing an exceptional job,” he said.

The 14 deaths in the first six months of this year came from a total of 35 shoot-outs police engaged in.  Not every shooting results in a death.  Last year’s 13 fatalities were the result of a total of 44 police-involved shootings for the entire year.
