The battle over how long teachers and students should be in the classroom continues for Chicago Public Schools. The Chicago Teachers Union is upset about Chicago Public Schools new guidelines to lengthen high school days.

On Thursday CPS released new guidelines for lengthening high school days ahead of the 2012-2013 academic year. They’re calling for high schoolers and teachers to be in school for close to 40 more minutes a day. CPS argues more time in the classroom will boost student achievement.

But the Chicago Teachers Union says there are bigger problems that need to be solved first. In a news release, the union said, “It won’t matter how much longer a struggling student stays in a high school building if that school is under-resourced and under-staffed.”

Chicago Public Schools did not say whether high schools teachers will be compensated for their extra time.
