The Chicago Board of Education Wenesday afternoon voted unanimously to close or revamp 16 schools. The schools were targeted either for low enrollment or poor academic performance.

Some critics, including parents and teachers, say the closings were driven by real estate interests rather than the best interests of students. The district has defended the move, saying big problems at schools require dramatic solutions.
