Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis says she wants an international search for the city’s next public schools CEO.

Schools Chief Ron Huberman this week announced he will step down at the end of the month.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says the new CEO should have a background in business.

Karen Lewis says the new person should be an educator. “Are we surprised by what Mayor Daley wants? The good news is what Mayor Daley wants will only last for so long anyway. And I mean no disrespect, but we’re going in a different direction now,” Lewis said.

Lewis says the city’s public schools needs a superintendent, not a CEO.

The Chicago Teachers Union has had several conflicts with management recently including teacher layoffs.
