Fewer than 10,000 ComEd customers remain without power on a scorching Independence Day.

A company spokesperson says the utility service projects that most of them will have power restored Wednesday night. Arlana Johnson said since Sunday, the company has restored power to more than 300,000 homes, mostly in western suburbs such as West Chicago, Addison, Glen Ellyn and Lombard.

The remaining outages have taken long(er) to fix because of extensive damage that a fast-moving thunderstorm inflicted on the company’s infrastructure,” said Johnson. “Lots of downed trees, mature trees, taking out wires and poles. And so essentially in these areas, we’re having to rebuild parts of our system in order to get power restored.”

Johnson said this week’s heat wave has not added any significant stress on the system.
