Parts of Interstate 80 will likely remain closed during morning rush hour after a crash early Monday morning that killed four people. The crash happened on I-80 near Kedzie Avenue and the Plaza 43 toll booth in Hazel Crest, about 18 miles south of Chicago.

Master Sergeant Jeanette Beck is with the Illinois State Police. She said the crash happened just after 2 a.m. Monday.

“The vehicle made a u-turn in the middle of the expressway and began to travel eastbound in the westbound lanes and subsequently struck another vehicle head-on. The vehicle that was traveling the wrong way then burst into flames,” Beck said.

The drivers of both cars were killed, as were two passengers. One passenger was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The police were unsure about how long the vehicle was traveling the wrong direction on the highway.

Beck said the police suspect the crash is alcohol-related.
