Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he did not direct a consulting firm with ties to him to help groups in favor of his education reforms.

The Chicago Tribune reports Resolute Consulting gave money and organizational aid to religious and community groups in favor of lengthening school days, strengthening charter schools and closing under-performing schools.

The firm is run by Greg Goldner, who was campaign manager for Emanuel’s first congressional race in 2002.

Emanuel said Tuesday he didn’t know about consulting firm’s involvement.

“That will not distract from what I think is an essential that we have to do to turn around our schools that are not succeeding and that are failing. Those who have to look into it will look into it,” said Emanuel.

The Tribune also says Goldner’s firm gave money to Reverends who paid protesters to march in favor of Emanuel’s plan for a longer school day.

Goldner denied the mayor asked him to help groups lobbying for his education reforms.
