Emanuel Says Hiring More Cops Top Priority In Budget Process

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is sharing more details about his plan to hire more police officers.

There was some question last week about whether the mayor would be adding new cops to the department, or if he would move current employees from desk jobs to the streets -- as he has done in past years.

On Wednesday, Emanuel told reporters there will be a "net increase" of police officers in the 2017 budget, and that every other budget decision would be made around the “priority” of hiring more cops.

The mayor wouldn’t say how many cops the city will hire, adding that decision is up to the superintendent. Earlier this week, a police spokesman deferred that same question back to the mayor’s office, though Superintendent Eddie Johnson said he would of course take more cops.
