Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to temporarily change some city rules and regulations during the upcoming G8 and NATO summits.

Emanuel introduced an ordinance during a City Council meeting Wednesday that, if passed, would significantly increase fines for resisting a police officer from $25-$500 to $200-$1,000.

The ordinance would also give the mayor power to approve plans with public and private groups regarding security or planning for the summits without the approval of city council.

Emanuel said the changes are necessary to ensure public safety during the summits.

“We’re just doing what’s appropriate to make sure we can hold the conference. People can express their views. The leaders can have their meetings, and we can do it in a safe and responsible way,” said Emanuel.

Emanuel said the NATO and G8 summits are scheduled to be held at McCormick Place.

The conferences are scheduled for May of next year.
