Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday would not say whether the city will appeal a federal court ruling that struck down part of Chicago’s tough gun ordinance.

A federal judge this week overturned a part of the ordinance that prohibits people with a prior conviction for “unlawful use” of a firearm from getting a city gun license. The judge said that part of the ordinance is unconstitutionally vague.

Emanuel said the city’s top lawyer is still reviewing the ruling, but maintained he’s dedicated to keeping the city’s gun laws intact.

“You can not have … just more cops on the street,” Emanuel said at an unrelated news conference. “It has [to be] part of a comprehensive strategy. You’ve heard me talk about it. The reason we have gun laws, the reason I’m trying to also pass tougher gun laws down in Springfield, is because it’s a … essential complement to your overall crime strategy.”

The mayor said much of the city’s gun ordinance is still in place. It also requires classroom training for would-be gun owners, and limits people to getting one handgun license per month.
