A deal between Goose Island Beer Company and a brewery partially owned by Anheuser-Busch will be finalized within weeks. Portland, Oregon based Widmer Brothers Brewing Company will purchase a stake in the Chicago brewery.

The director of a trade group says Goose Island fans shouldn’t worry about their beer’s quality. Paul Gatza, with the Brewer’s Association, says Anheuser-Busch has preserved the quality of other small breweries with which it works.

“They generally leave these brands alone and leave the operations alone so as not to mess with them and mess with their success,” he says.

Gatza did note that Redhook Breweries saw sales decline in Washington State after Anheuser-Busch bought a portion of the company 12 years ago. He says some beer enthusiasts say they can taste a difference when a large company gets involved with a smaller brew.
