The future of one of the last drive-in theatres in Illinois will likely be decided tonight.

A developer bought property last year that includes Aurora’s Hi-Lite 30 drive-in and offered to donate it to the city rather than pay a mandatory fee. That offer met resistance from the mayor who said it would cost the city over a million dollars to bring the theatre up to code.

The developer now says he’ll donate a different piece of property to the East Aurora School District instead.

Alderman Stephanie Kifowit, a theatre supporter, questioned the timing of the school offer.

“It’s obvious that the developer never wanted the drive-in to remain and this is a way to kind of force the issue now into a different discussion,” she argues.

The Aurora City Council plans to vote on the issue tonight.
