Hundreds of people have turned out to remember a Chicago man who served his city as a police officer before becoming a firefighter. Corey Ankum was one of two Chicago firefighters killed last week when a roof collapsed after a fire.

Uniformed firefighters poured into a church on Chicago’s South Side to honor Ankum, who joined the department less than two years ago. He was killed Dec. 22 while responding to a fire at a vacant laundry building.

His funeral at Apostolic Church of God will be followed by burial at Lincoln Cemetery in Blue Island.

Ankum is survived by his wife and three children.

Firefighter Edward Stringer also died in the roof collapse. Stringer’s funeral was Tuesday.
