A federal judge has ordered that the remaining families must leave a notorious Chicago housing project early. Only two families are left at the Cabrini-Green public housing high rise on Chicago’s near North Side. They were given until January to move out, but the Chicago Housing Authority, which runs the building, asked Judge William Hibbler today to close it down early. An agency attorney said it’s not safe or economical to keep two families in a building designed to hold 134 families.

Attorney Jack Block argued the residents haven’t found suitable temporary homes.

Judge Hibbler ordered the families move out as fast as possible, with next Friday as the new deadline. Attorneys for both sides called the ruling a victory, but Annie Ricks, one of the residents who hasn’t moved out yet, denounced the ruling.

The first of the public housing high rises were built in the 1940s, but became widely known for crime and gang activity over the decades.
