Local musician Mike Reed stops by Radio M to talk about some of the performers at the Pitchfork Music Festival. This year’s roster is a testament to the continued commitment to more global-influenced artists at music festivals. More and more artists are incorporating sounds from other cultures, like Vampire Weekend and The Ruby Suns. But also on the bill is some “traditional” music that will no doubt whip the indie crowd into dust-flying groove. Boban Markovic, for example, is perhaps the greatest Romani trumpeter, known around the world for his frenetic Eastern European brass music.

Also,“The Featured Album” this month is a nod to the French as Bastille Day approaches, but don’t expect the sounds of accordion or chanson. In 1982, a trio of French friends formed the group Antena and recorded a five-song EP, Camino del Sol, that was ahead of its time and perhaps suffered for its innovation. The group mixed Brazilian samba rhythms with electronics, and the result was a jazzy, trippy laid back sound that presaged artists like Bebel Gilberto, Zero 7 and Ceu by 25 years. The sound was dubbed electro-samba by Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys. Local record label Numero Group re-released the EP a few years back, with original cover art, along with other songs Antena recorded during their brief existence, including a version of “The Girl from Ipanema.” This is the perfect sound for a warm summer Friday night.
