When I first hosted the Louder Than a Bomb finalists here in 2005, I couldn’t have been more impressed with these remarkable young writers. Never having heard slam poetry before, I was struck by their confidence (not so sure I could have done that when I was 15 years old). Their work confronts issues of race, war, sexism, disability, love - here were kids telling me about my city from their perspective. And I was loving every minute of it. kevincoval_onstageFour years later, Chicago Public Radio continues to be involved with this annual Festival. This year’s special radio broadcast will air tomorrow at 9 a.m. Hosted by Kevin Coval, a regular contributor to Eight Forty-Eight and a frequent guest on Russell Simmons’ HBO Def Poetry Jam, he is the author of a new book, Everyday People, coming out later this month. In addition to festival highlights, the special includes interviews with poets and coaches, each weighing in on what Louder Than a Bomb has created and why they participate. With scoring by the masterful DJ Itchie Fingers, Young Chicago Author’s Robbie Q. Telfer has publiclly declared: “It’s the single best way one can celebrate our nation’s independence from tyranny!”
