U.S. Senator Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, said the country needs to make a number of changes to the oil industry to help bring the price of gasoline down. Around Chicago, the average price of gas is just over $4 per gallon. Kirk says the sooner the U.S. can wrap up its operations in Libya, the better for the price of gas.

“There is an instability factor in the oil markets now that is causing prices to be higher than they otherwise would and that’s why I think quickly wrapping up the Gadhaffi dictatorship would help,” Kirk said.

Kirk said the United States should look to increase oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. He also favors a new pipeline connecting the U.S. and Canada.
