The Naperville City Council today will debate a proposed smoking ban.

Councilman Richard Furstenau supports an ordinance that would prohibit smoking at most civic festivals, restaurants and bars. He supports exemptions only for bars that don’t serve food.

“It has always been the way, I guess, when you have a drink, strictly a drink, some times there are cigarettes involved and I don’t think we should it ban at all. I think the smokers should have some place where they can go in I think this is a good compromise,” he says.

The Downtown Naperville Alliance argues a smoking ban will encourage patrons to drive to neighboring cities without smoking restrictions.
