A new farmers’ market opens today in Bronzeville.

People in the neighborhood say they’ve had to go outside the area get to fresh organic fruits and vegetables.

Benita Johnson Gabriel is the director of the community group that helped develop the market.   She says she hopes the Bronzeville Community Market will show  large grocery chains that residents want fresh produce.

GABRIEL: What we’re hoping that they will see from the success of this market is that there is a clear need to bring fresh, healthy choices to the community and that they would be more open to coming to these communities.

Unlike other city sponsored markets, this one has been allowed to bring in more than just locally grown produce.

The market will offer prepared foods, antiques, beauty products, and some tropical produce grown in other states.  Market goers will even be able to get tested for diabetes.

The market runs on Sundays through the end of October.
