Starting in 2017, anyone with paid sick time in Illinois will be able to use that leave to care for an immediate family member. Currently, businesses decide on their own if people can use sick time for children, spouses or parents. Some business leaders have opposed any expansions to sick leave, saying the expansions are expensive and that bosses should be able to decide what they can afford. Proponents argue that by helping to decrease the spread of illness the bill may help economic output.
