By Tony ArnoldA top official at Navy Pier said the city should not put a casino at the tourist attraction. Illinois legislators recently passed a measure expanding gambling around the state, including the addition of a casino in Chicago.
Jim Reilly, the trustee of the organization overseeing Navy Pier, said he wants to see more attractions for adults, but a casino wouldn’t fit in with the atmosphere of the pier.
“A casino is just totally inconsistent with the character of the pier,” he said. “I’m not even sure it’s a good place for a casino, but, just, in my opinion, it’s just a non-starter.”
Even though legislators already approved the gambling bill, it won’t be available for the governor to sign until later this year. Navy Pier officials said they want to build a hotel at the end of the pier and hold more music concerts.
