Chicago police shot and killed a cougar on the city’s North Side yesterday evening.

Spots of blood dotted the pavement behind a home on the 3400 block of North Hamilton Avenue. That’s where police cornered the 150-pound cougar after a short chase through the Roscoe Village neighborhood. Resident James Reynolds was watching TV when he heard the initial shots fired at the animal. He says he ran out his back door and saw the cougar in the alley next door.

REYNOLDS: I saw the cougar was trying to jump this fence and this fence. He was trying to get over, but I knew he had to be injured at that point because he couldn’t jump. So I heard officers coming up the alley and I just said, ‘Officers, he’s down here.’ You know, so they came down, they told me to get in the house and then they opened fire on him and killed him.

Authorities in suburban Wilmette say several residents reported seeing a cougar on Sunday. About two weeks ago, suburban North Chicago police received several reports of large cat sightings, though the animal was never found.
