Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel is searching for a new CEO for Chicago Public Schools. Emanuel says he will consider current interim schools chief Terry Mazany for the job.
“I’m gonna be looking for a CEO of our schools. Terry obviously will be on that list. But I’ll be looking at others for a fresh start and a new beginning,” Emanuel told reporters Wednesday.
Mazany has only been at the district’s helm for three months but says he would consider staying on.
Emanuel campaigned on a number of education proposals that are already being tried. For one, he wants to further expand charter schools. He’s also touted the Academy for Urban School Leadership, a nonprofit teacher training outfit that runs 19 Chicago public schools. Emanuel wants to spur innovation by making schools compete for funding.
The mayor-elect will also have the power to appoint all seven members of Chicago’s Board of Education. Two current members have served since Daley took over the schools in 1995.
