Artists Tiffany Holmes and Frances Whitehead, with choreographer Carrie Hanson, have tackled major environmental issues with surprising and concrete results. Whitehead is working with plant scientists, meterologists, and urban planners to use city parks as climate change laboratories. Hanson’s company, The Seldoms, recently premiered an entire performance based on consumption, waste and landfills. Holmes coined the term “eco-visualisation” to describe an emerging art movement that is devoted to using information visualization techniques to get the general public interested in ecological issues. The artists are joined by environmental scientist Liam Heneghan, co director of the Institute for Nature and Culture at DePaul University, for this exciting and dynamic salon.

Dr. Liam Heneghan is an ecologist working at DePaul University where he is a Professor in the Environmental Science Program and co-director of DePaul University’s Institute for Nature and Culture. He is co-chair of the Science Team with Chicago Wilderness. In addition Heneghan is a published poet, and recently was invited to comment on the work on Irish playwright Conor McPherson at the Steppenwolf Theater.

Recorded Monday, January 26, 2009 at Chicago Cultural Center.
