Several schools and community groups are breathing a sigh of relief this morning after being taken off the list of Chicago Public Schools to be closed or reconfigured.

School and community groups have been relentless in their protest of the proposed school closings, going so far as to introduce legislation in the state General Assembly to try to block the closings.

Last night, CPS released a statement by CEO Ron Huberman saying that six schools would be spared. The statement cited compelling community arguments and, in some cases, improved performance.

Ladwanna Harrison is a first-grade teacher at Oliver Wendell Holmes Elementary, where the entire staff was to be let go this summer and replaced by new teachers. That will no longer happen.

HARRISON: You stand up for what you believe in, and I think we all believe that we’ve been doing the right thing. We believe in our students, we believe in Holmes. And we stood up for that.

The board is still scheduled to vote on 16 school closures and consolidations tomorrow. Protests are planned.
