The Chicago Board of Education voted this afternoon to close or revamp 16 schools.

Parents, teachers, and community members packed board chambers this morning to protest the closings. Some had camped out all night in front of CPS headquarters to bring attention to the issue.

Many asked board members and new schools CEO Ron Huberman to put off the vote and have an outside organization determine the effect school closings have on children.

Chicago Teachers Union president Marilyn Stewart mocked the proposal. She said the district should change its slogan to reflect the number of children forced to transfer to new schools under the policy.

STEWART: It should be educate me, move me, inspire me, move me, transform me, move me. I think a moratorium on school closings is called for.

A contingent of satisfied parents also spoke to the board. Their children attend schools the board has already revamped.
