Some Indiana state lawmakers want to make sure schools still teach cursive writing. Indiana had approved new standards this year that excluded mandatory cursive instruction in the classroom.

Indiana State Sen. Jean Leising said if schools don’t teach cursive, students will lose an important form of communication.

“If a child is taught to write cursive when they are in the lower grade, they will be able to read it and they will ultimately have that as an option  for communication,” Leising said.

Leising also said she hopes to introduce the bill next month.

A spokesman at the Indiana Department of Education said under the current law, schools have the option to teach cursive writing.
