Illinois lawmakers are making a push to get more funding for child care providers.

The House approved a plan for to redirect money from the state budget and put it toward child care subsidies.

State Rep. Chapin Rose, a Republican, voted in favor of the measure. He said last year’s budget is not the cause or blame for the budget shortfall.

“It is the cause and the fault of one governor who spent the money somewhere else, and now we are all being called on to fix it on behalf of our constituents,” he said.

The plan now heads to the Senate.

Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration had said the money was shifted to pay for welfare benefits.

Some advocates say that put families at risk to lose at least three months of childcare funding.

Gov. Quinn also called for increasing family co-payments and a reduction in the amount going to providers.
