Student Says He’s Being Harassed For Not Pledging Allegiance

Fifteen-year-old Shemar Cooper is a sophomore at Eisenhower High School in Blue Island. His mother Kelley Porter-Turner says he’s been sitting during the pledge of allegiance as a protest against poor treatment toward black people. She says a teacher has twice demanded he participate. Porter-Turner says the teacher should be disciplined. In a statement, the school says it respects the rights of students and staff to recite or not recite the pledge and that it’s investigating the “isolated incident.”
