The historic former Carson Pirie Scott building in downtown Chicago is getting a new tenant. Target announced Tuesday it’s filling in the first two floors of what’s now referred to as the Sullivan Center, named after the building’s architect, Louis Sullivan.

Carson Pirie Scott left the building in 2007, leaving a retail hole in the heart of downtown Chicago. Mayor Richard Daley says the new Target will help keep State Street and the rest of the Loop strong.

“Everything is connected,” Daley said. “And so this is vitally important and it’s changing. You can see both ends changing. You can see the middle changing and it’s very dynamic. The core of the city is the key. If you don’t have a core of the city, most cities fail.”

A Target spokesman said the new store will create 200 new jobs. He said it won’t carry the same types of products as suburban locations; think much smaller patio furniture for downtown residents. He expects the Target will open in October 2012. Ten Targets are currently open in Chicago.
